American National Biography (AMERICAN NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY SUPPLEMENT) Reviews
This set is designed as a successor to the venerable Dictionary of American Biography and it achieves its goal. Except in cases where one is doing substantial research on a historical figure, the entries here will be all that is needed. It is the high quality of the contributors that make a reference outstanding and these scholars, unlike most internet contributors, include useful bibliographies with the entries. There is always a quibble. Some subjects included in the Dictionary have been dropped and sometimes the omission is unfortunate. William Chapman Ralston, an important Californian and one of history's most interesting bankers, comes to mind. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding reference.
