Economic Development and Environmental Sustainability: New Policy Options (Initiative for Policy Dialogue) Reviews
This is an excellently timed book. Issues related to the environment make regular appearances today in the news, in novels, even in children's movies. Yet so often the focus remains on the specific problems we're facing, such as global warming or the death of the oceans, with less attention paid to the very real need for solutions. Economics Development and Environmental Stability does an excellent job of redressing that gap.
The authors of this book worked hard to bring together various threads of research and investigation around environmental economics. Unfortunately the environment of neo liberal economics they use as a vantage point is not transformed and the book fails to make significant changes to the status quo. While not disparaging its value and contribution I would recommend readers consider reading books on ecological economics, a field which makes a more fundamental analysis of the of the relationship of economics and the environment. As for the nature of sustainable development the social inequality dimension can perhaps best be explained by authors like Naom Chomsky and Vandana Shiva.
