China Horse Marine: John R. Angstadt U.S.M.C. American Legation, Peiping China, 1934-1937 Reviews
Beautifully printed and lavishly illustrated book, featuring camp newspaper excerpts, personal travel narratives, accounts of events in not just China but also Haiti and Nicaragua. The short, but mostly personal text pieces are interesting and give a sense of the Marine and the man and how he finds life in the mounted detachment in a very foreign and hostile environment. If you are looking for a detailed chronological unit history or a memoir, this is not it and you may be disappointed. The last thing I was looking for was a unit history and the best Marine memoir of any period is still Major John Thomason's "Fix Bayonets". I was not disappointed.
Wss hoping for a narrative, but it is just miscellaneous pictures. Too expensive.
This is a niche topic. However, it focuses on a unique formation within the US Marine Corps. I have never heard of a mounted USMC unit until I picked up this book. You can get quite a bit of info on this unit from the internet, text and pics but this book is beautifully produced and bound, with all the relevant text and photos arranged within. The marines are mounted on small mongolian ponies. This is a fantastic cavalry book!
You'll not find a better book about the"Horse Marines" the Mounted Platoon of the U..S.M.C. Legation Guard at Pieping in the 1930's.As a matter of fact, you probably won't find any .Plenty of articles and mentions in other books, but no books exclusively about Marine Corps "cavalry".Many photos and illustrations by Col. John W.Thomason,Jr.(who commanded the platoon in the mid 30s).It also has info and pictures about the use of horses in the Banana Wars in Central America and Haiti.Well worth the 40 dollar price tag,,I suspect you pay a lot more in the future.
IF YOUR A FORMER MARINE, CURRENT MARINE OR COLLECTOR, AND INTERESTED IN THE PRE-WW11 US MARINE CORPS MOUNTED LEGATION GUARD [THE FAME HORSE MARINES SERVING IN CHINA] YOU MOST CERTAINLY WANT THIS BOOK!
Outstanding work of history on the 'Horse Marines" of China. Great photos on a most interesting subject.
Wonderful book and a must for all USMC collectors !
