Above an Angry Sea: Men and Missions of the United States Navy's PB4Y-1 Liberator and PB4Y-2 Privateer Squadrons Pacific Theater: October 1944–September 1945 Reviews
I purchased Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition to study the heroics of my personal hero Commander Sheldon Sutton ,WWII decorated ,VPB-117 Blue Raider Crew 18 Commander. Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition is the passionate like work of Alan Carey , whose father Aviation Radioman 2nd Class Robert Carey, gallantly fought with VPB-109 - The Reluctant Raiders. The dedication that produced this book is evidenced by the minute attention to detail including documentation of fallen Blue Raider heroes who paid the ultimate price, PB4Y Summary of Operations , individual Squadron Records , PB4Y Aerial Claims of Confirmed Kills and a myriad of photographs. But calling Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition a book is akin to calling Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Masterpiece a painting on the ceiling . Although I had studied the exploits of the Blue Raiders on their website, it was from Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition that I first learned how Commander Sutton achieved the distinction of Flying Ace , usually reserved for single engine fighter aviators , while commanding his outstanding crew on their four engine PBY4 Liberator. The photos alone pull back the curtain on these brave patriots, as they literally saved Western civilization over 70 years ago . While I was reading aloud Alan Carey's descriptions of the Blue Raider Crew 18's seven enemy kills to the Sutton Family, Commander Sutton's attention was riveted on Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition as if he had stepped back in time. One might have thought that Alan Carey had flown second seat . When I asked Commander Sutton what he thought of Alan Carey's account , he replied " Just outstanding, just fabulous!"
This is the 2nd Edition of Alan C. Carey's fascinating and well-researched book Above An Angry Sea which documents the missions and exploits of the USN Patrol Bomber squadrons during WWII, aviators who flew the 4-engine Consolidated B-24 Liberator and Privateer heavy bomber from forward advance airfields in the Pacific to attack Japanese shipping, bases, aircraft and submarines and later took part in the bombing of the Japanese homeland itself. They also acted as patrol aircraft and searched for survivors of downed aircraft and ships that were sunk.
