I really can't complain too much; this book cost me $4.73 with shipping. (Shipping took forever through hippo books, but that's another story...). Each chapter begins with a brief history of the topic covered. These range from Drawing, Persoective, Oil Painting, Pastels, etc. Each section within the topic is approx. 2 pages long. There is at least one instructional per topic. In this I mean that someone painted a picture, and they walk you through the basic steps they took to achieve their final result, as well as materials used. I'm not sure I found anything in the book particularly useful or inspiring, but I enjoyed perusing it. If you have no idea what you're doing, then I think this would be a good book to learn about some of the more popular techniques, but if you're looking to expound on knowledge you already have, then I think this book is somewhat out dated and doesn't contain a lot to be gained.

I bought this for my 10 year old son. He likes the book. He shows different types of art that he is also interested in and if he wants a more info we can get a book on that subject.

like all dk books, the illustrations are beautiful. the layout very attractive without being too busy. straight forward information some of which i was not aware of altho i am an artist! i never read "clean brushes in cold water" anywhere. i guess it's something the brush companies keep to themselvea to boost sales - it was NEVER printed on the back of any packages of brushes - many of which were very expensive. that info alone paid the book.

covers all the basics and more, I would recommend it for people starting out on their own, helps you know what is what, most art stores can be overwhelming to a novice, this book shares insights on materials and technique,

We bought this for our 14-year-old nephew, who is just starting to exhibit an interest in art. It is truly a great introduction to drawing and perspective, painting (oil, watercolor, acrylics), and even mixed media. Don't expect great depth in any one area, but its easy to read and use, heavily illustrated to keep kids' attentions, has a nice glossary. All in all, a really really great value and a book that is exactly what its title says it is.

Good book. Basic collection of concepts and ideas relating to art methods, techniques, and tools. Definitely more informational than instructional. Illustrations are good, and explanations are decent.I would recommend for the young artist around the age of 10 who is interested in art. This book will definately encourage a young artist if they have an inquisitive mind.

My teenage daughter goes to an online private school and as you might imagine trying to take an art class online can be a little tricky. One of the books the teach recommends is this one. I was lucky to get it for my daughter here on Amazon used for a great price, it is in great condition! It is a very large book that includes and introduction to many mediums of art, it is many volumes in one book making it great for beginners!
