Orchestral Music: A Handbook Reviews
I have been a David Daniels addict for many years. This latest edition is truly a masterpiece and should be in everyone's library who is at all interested in the detail of orchestral music. As a conductor it is invaluable in program planning and can be used to startle most people with the amount of information one can dispense after looking it up in Daniels.
As soon as I bought it a friend pointed out that it is available online. Well, yes. But sometimes a hardcover is necessary and this one is perfect for the purpose we us it for in the library. Accurate, thorough, easy to interpret. If you have ever needed a quick reference for repertoire and its requirements, this is your source. Period.
BEWARE!! This book is useless in the Kindle edition - it is NOT SEARCHABLE!! For a reference book of 1000 pages, there's no way to look up information. You will just refund it!
This handbook was a gift for my sister who requested it to use in her job as a managing director for an orchestra. This book fit the bill in every way shape and form. She thought it was great!
Great gift for my wife who uses it every day. If you are a conductor with an orchestra you need this book.
The content is totally fine, but my one star review is on the digital presentation of the kindle file. It seems that they took the image file from each page of the printed edition and simply converted them as a kindle file. As a result, the font is so small and it's hardly legible. I want a full refund for this!
I knew about this book just a few weeks ago. I was told that this is the material every orchestral librarian should have. It is certainly so! It has an enormous range of composers, from baroque to contemporary ones. Information on instrumentation and edition in each piece is clearly indicated. An excellent book!
If you are a music librarian, an orchestral performer, anyone seeking orchestral players needed for a work's performance you must have this. It is the finest resource for printed orchestral music....bar none.
