Into the Sunlit Splendor: The Aviation Art of William S. Phillips Reviews
This is simply a magnificent book. I own three dozen other aviation fine art books. If I could have only one of them on my shelf, it would be this one. I'll try to explain why.
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK OF THE ART OF WILLIAM PHILLIPS. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD THE PRINTS, THIS IS A GREAT COLLECTION OF THE COLLECTED ART.
William S Phillips is one of the very top aviation artists, and this collection of his work certainly says why. He is very accurate in his depiction of various aircraft, but also places them in settings that evoke the wonder and romance of flight. I greatly enjoy the book. It's the sort of book you can just crack open anywhere and what you see will please and interest you. Yes, the captions are sometimes a bit corny, but the text gives good historic context to the paintings, and the text gives a window into exactly who this very talented artist is. Very worthwhile purchase!
Incredible book!! If you like aviation and history, you will love this book. The art is amazing!!! I can't say enough about this artist.
I am more of a fan of Phillips "nostalgia" pictures than just the airplane pictures, so I was a little disappointed in the treatment of them. Several were cover pages with printing on them which ruined the nostalgia mood. Several were too small. Several were good. If you are a fan of all of Phillips paintings, then you must have this. The quality is excellent.
This is simply too good a collection of paintings to not own it. You will enjoy leafing through this book at odd times, getting lost in the picture that is before you and forgetting that it is art and not a slice of life.
Whether an old hand or new to aviation art, this is the book to own. Phillips' art is in itself amazing. However, the presentation and accompanying words make the book even better. The size of the book ensures the reader can appreciate the art without the distraction of page gutters and make it perfect for display. Ann and Charlie Cooper have done a wonderful job describing the thoughts and ideas behind each piece of art - very well researched. You won't be disappointed.
A great collection of details about the artist, his revelations of His creation and the aeronautical, technological and historical creations of mankind, both in war and peace. I couldn't be happier with a book in my library.
