The cover is not so enticing, with that red outline.
I'm a huge fan of Gene Smith's work. it's awe inspiring, but this book isn't the best one out there. There are a lot of letters that give you insight into his world, but it is badly designed. If there were another edition released with a new designer this book could be great.
The story is well worth the read. The photos are even better. Also try Minamata and the Jazz Loft Project.
A fascinating book about of W. Eugene Smith one of the greatest documentary photographers of the 20th century. Risking his life and health to bring back the true story only to find it being compromised and made harmless by the editors at Life magazine willing to sacrifice it all for the sake of commercialised photojournalism.

Superb coverage, with superb reproductions, of one of photography's geniuses
