Don't be put off by having to do a little drawing of your own to make the patterns to use. It's easy.

As other reviewers have pointed out, there are no actual patterns--it's more like a verbal description (with some illustrations) walking you through the process of constructing each item. (They are, however, made from simple shapes that are pretty easy to make yourself once you know what it's supposed to look like.)

much of the instructional information is repetitive, from one garment/vestment to another, again and again. there are not actual patterns for the garments/vestments but reduced in size illustrations which would need to be enlarged by a professional copying company or service to have actual patterns for use. helpful in instructions, but again, the general sewing and process information that is identical for each could have been provided once as an introduction to technique rather than repeated with each. thankful for the details but laborious in repetition. 4 stars.

I've only made pastor stoles from the patterns, but the offerings are terrific for all sorts of church vestments.

I used this to make deacon stoles. It was not exactly clear in sewing together since she said to match sides ad sew. What she means is to sew long end to long end when sewing the sash to the tails.

This is a well thought out and organized book. The first few chapters break down the information that you will need for all the projects into easy to understand topics (like pattern making, cutting, sewing, and decorating). The rest of the chapters each cover different projects (like different kinds of stoles, albs, chasuble, and scapular). It teaches how to make patterns for each project and how to modify the pattern to be customized and sized for the individual it is being made for. If the idea of making the pattern yourself is too overwhelming it gives contact information to obtain readymade patterns for the projects.

I ended up returning this book because I didn't feel it was even worth keeping. The alb instructions were kinda pathetic, I've seen child's ghost costumes that were more complicated and better looking than this. I won't give the exact pattern away, but imagine cutting the front and back of a really long shirt and sewing them together, that's it. In the end the final illustration looks much more like a choir gown than any deacons alb I've ever seen. The stole patterns are a bit better, but really you probably don't need a lot of help with those anyway.

As an experienced sewer (50+ years) and teacher of new sewers, this book is the most excellent one I have ever seen! The instructions and hints are clear with no steps missing for both the inexperienced and experienced sewer. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
